Williams reveal retro 1981 livery ahead of Spanish GP in Madrid

Williams will run a retro 1981 tribute livery at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid as they seek to end a damaging eight-race scoring drought.

The visual homage to their championship-winning FW07C arrives during a deeply challenging 2026 campaign. The Grove outfit has failed to score since Alex Albon finished eighth in Monaco. They currently sit ninth in the constructors’ standings with 11 points, trailing Audi by five.

Honouring Past Championship Glory

The special design features a white, green, and navy blue colourway, created alongside sponsor Atlassian. Speaking to formula1.com, team principal James Vowles outlined his development philosophy.

“Our mission to get back to the front of the grid is drawn from, inspired by and informed by everything we’ve done before,” Vowles said.

He added to Crash.net that the design connects their Jarama heritage with their current transformation. Carlos Sainz will race the colours in his birth city, marking his first appearance on the new 22-turn Madring circuit.

Rebuilding Under Intense Pressure

Vowles faces immense scrutiny to deliver track results that match the team’s confident cultural messaging. While the wider paddock regroups and rivals promise to return stronger, the necessity for progress is stark.

Elite competitors often face intense pressure during rebuilding phases, much like Joan Mir defending his crash record before a crucial team move.

The Grove squad must now convert this historical momentum into tangible performance when practice begins in Madrid.
