Rosberg storms to sixth consecutive pole in Abu Dhabi

Nico Rosberg will start ahead of his teammate for the sixth race in a row after beating Hamilton by nearly four tenths of a second.

Surprisingly both the Mercedes went straight out on the supersoft tyres in Q1, with Hamilton setting the early benchmark a tenth and a half quicker than his teammate with an impressive time of 1:40.9.

A flurry of fast times at the end of the session saw Button climb ninth, and Vettel drops down the order, before being knocked out of qualifying after slowing down earlier in the lap.

The Ferrari driver will start 16th, ahead of Alonso (17th), who suffered a puncture, Ericsson (18th) and the Marussia’s (Stevens, 19th, Merhi 20th).

Q2 started with problems for Romain Grosjean, who was forced to stop his car on the track, leaving 14 cars left to fight for a place in the top ten.

Hamilton set the pace once again, two-tenths quicker than Rosberg, but it was the Force India’s who impressed the most, with Perez best of the rest ahead of the Ferrari of Raikkonen.

Verstappen was unable to get ahead of his teammate, Sainz, who wins the qualifying battle for the year and scraped through to Q3 in tenth.

The 18-year-old failed to make the final qualifying session alongside Button, who enjoyed one of his best qualifying sessions of the year in 12th, Maldonado (13th), Nasr (14th) and Grosjean (15th).

The green lights signified the start of Q3, and Rosberg set the early pace with Hamilton putting in his worst lap time of the day with a 1:41.1.

Perez impressed once again, just four tenths off provisional pole, but Raikkonen was also looking quick.

It had to be a good second lap for Hamilton, and after putting in a strong middle sector, he just about tipped Rosberg of provisional pole by a couple of tenths.

But Rosberg was even quicker, setting purple times in every sector and knocking Hamilton off the top spot by 0.377 seconds.

The top ten lines up: Rosberg (pole), Hamilton (2nd), Raikkonen (3rd), Perez (4th), Ricciardo (5th), Bottas (6th), Hulkenberg (7th), Massa (8th), Kvyat (9th) and Sainz (10th).
