Wet standing starts set for F1 return

Wet races will no longer have to be started behind the safety car after an F1 Strategy Group meeting voted in favour of changes to make the start of races more exciting.

The FIA have come in for criticism after this month’s British Grand Prix was started behind the safety car and stayed out for a number of laps.

Perhaps the biggest criticism from the fans regarding starting behind the safety car is that it stays out for too many laps.

Drivers are often frustrated on the radio telling the pit wall that the track ready for racing. Some drivers often take a gamble and switch to the intermediate tyres as soon as the race starts for real.

Reports suggest that the races will still start behind the safety car and will circulate for a few laps before peeling off into the pit lane.

The drivers will then line up in their grid slots and perform a standing start on the full wet tyre compound.

The change could be implemented from as early as this weekend at Hockenheim.
