Marquez tops FP3, Rins down in 20th

It was Alex Marquez who topped FP3 in Moto2 by over two tenths of a second ahead of of Johann Zarco. However, the main talking point from the session was title contender Alex Rins finishing down in 20th place.

Early in the session it was the two Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS boys of Franco Morbidelli and Marquez exchanging the number one spot. Takaaki Nakagami also showed pace early on, running a very strong 10-lap stint. His best time in this split Morbidelli and Marquez.

In the second stint it was Zarco and Jonas Folger who showed their hands by moving to the top clearly in front of the rest of the pack. After returning to track for the final stint though, it became clear that the pack was much closer. Marquez managed to regain first position with a 1m53.340s and Sam Lowes also improved to go third ahead of Folger. Nakagami was fifth, Morbidelli sixth and Marcel Schrotter an impressive seventh.

There were a number of crashes, mostly at turn two. The challenging turn claimed Javier Simeon, Danny Kent, Luca Marini and Alex Rins after the chequered flag had just fallen.

Rins not only suffered a fall but was 1.8 seconds off the pace and much slower than he was yesterday. This could be a pivotal weekend in the championship battle if Rins cannot get his act together before qualifying and the race.
