Opening lap melee ruins Abt’s day

Contact on the opening lap of the Hong Kong ePrix ruined the day for Daniel Abt after the damage he sustained forced him to pit early, leaving him no other option but to go for the fastest lap in his second car.

Abt qualified a solid seventh place for the inaugural Hong Kong ePrix, but unable to avoid the opening lap pushing and shoving the German driver picked up damage so severe he was shown the black & orange flag by race stewards to repair a damaged rear wing. That early pit stop forced Abt into unsuccessfully challenging for the fastest lap of the race, as he retired his car early from the race following the unsuccessful attempt to take a consolation point home.

“Not the start into the season I was hoping for. After starting P7 I’ve been hit at the back and lost my rear wing which ended my race. Very unfortunate but that’s racing. On to the next one,” said Abt.
