Long Beach investigates hosting Formula 1 race

Formula 1 could be returning to Southern California as the city council of Long Beach has reopened investigations in hosting a race in 2019.

With the contract for the current IndyCar race ending next year, city officials are examining if they should bid for a Formula 1 slot, or stick with the IndyCar series.

A Formula 1 Grand Prix was last held in Long Beach in 1983, a race won by McLaren legend John Watson. Since then it has been home of IndyCar, and hosted Formula E on an adapted version of the circuit for two seasons.

According to the Long Beach Gazettes, the council has acquired outside help, signing a $150,000 contract with KPMG Corporate Finance, who will focus on the technical side of the proposal.

Formula 1, now with American owners have been trying to find a location to host a second race in the United States for a number of years. A plan to host a race on the shores of the Hudson River in New Jersey was abandoned following a lack of finance, which would fit alongside the current race in Austin.
