Frijns insists he’ll race despite injury

Amlin Andretti’s Robin Frijns insists a knee injury won’t stop him racing in the Monaco ePrix.

The Dutchman had to sit out of the first Blancpain GT Series Endurance race of the season after damaging ligaments in his knee whilst training but returned to race in the Sprint series last weekend, which removed any doubts from his own mind about his fitness.

“The only slight issue is the pitstop, but I will find a way if I have to,” he told Autosport.

Andretti is still concerned the mid-race car swap could be a problem for Frijns. Though the sprint race did involve a driver swap, getting out of the GT uses a different technique to getting out of a Formula E car. Something Frijns hasn’t yet had a chance to practice in Monaco.

Alexander Sims was put on standby for this weekend’s race, but Frijns is adamant the reserve driver won’t be needed.

“Jumping out I felt more than when I jumped in but, performance-wise, it didn’t affect a thing,” Frijns said when asked about the sprint race driver change.

“I feel ready. I still have the same pace. I didn’t feel anything in the race.”

Frijns will get two free practice sessions to practice the car swap – and driving an FE car around Monaco for the first time – but he is confident the injury shouldn’t have an impact on his race.
