Ilott wins opening F3 race in Austria

Callum Ilott led every lap of the opening European Formula 3 race at the Red Bull Ring, beating Joel Eriksson by one second.

Eriksson went around the outside of Maximilian Gunther at Turn 1 on the opening lap and almost passed poleman Ilott later in the lap.

The Swede pressured Ilott all race long but failed to find a way through. Ilott’s fifth win of the season moves him into third place in the drivers’ championship.

Gunther completed the podium, 2.3s off the race win. Championship leader Lando Norris finished where he started but only after pulling a bold move on Tadasuke Makino on the penultimate lap for fourth place.

Ferdinand Habsburg had a busy morning as he rose from 10th to sixth place ahead of Mick Schumacher who claimed his 16th points scoring finish of the season.

David Beckmann was eighth for Motopark with Guan Yu Zhou ninth after starting 13th.

Fifth in the championship Jake Hughes, who started in last position, was denied the final point by Pedro Piquet.

Devlin Defrancesco ended the race in 16th on his series debut. Carlin team-mate Jehan Daruvala failed to score for only the fourth time this year.
