Luthi crashes as Morbidelli takes pole

Franco Morbidelli took another step towards taking the Moto2 world championship by taking pole position at Sepang.

Morbidelli’s bid for the title was aided by a massive crash for his rival Tom Luthi. The Swiss rider ended up in fifth, but suffered a massive highside that saw him go to the medical centre.

The winner last time out Miguel Oliveria was second, with Fabio Quartararo putting in a stunning performance to end up in third, taking the final spot on the front row.

Alex Marquez was fourth, with Luthi and Francesco Bagnaia starting from fifth and sixth respectively. Marcel Schrotter was seventh in the session, with Brad Binder and Takaaki Nakagami joining him on the third row of the grid.

Mattia Pasini was tenth, and will start on the fourth row. The Italian will be joined by Hafizh Syahrin and Axel Pons, who start eleventh and twelfth respectively.

The Moto2 race will get underway at 5:20 BST
