Bottas beats Vettel to pole in Brazil as Hamilton crashes

Valtteri Bottas beat Sebastian Vettel to pole position in a dramatic qualifying session at Interlogas, which saw newly-crowned champion Lewis Hamilton crash into the barriers.

Raikkonen was quickest in the opening qualifying session, Vettel topped Q2 but it was Bottas who topped the session that mattered.

The Finn took his third career pole with a 1m08.322s on the super-soft tyres, edging Vettel by just 0.038s.

In Q1, Hamilton lost his Mercedes on the exit of Turn 6 on the run up the hill on his first flying lap. His WO8 slid sideways into the barriers but the Briton was unhurt.

It’s unclear whether Hamilton will be starting from the back of the grid or from the pitlane.

Kimi Raikkonen was third quickest ahead of the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, who has a 10-place grid penalty.

Consequently, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso will start in fifth and sixth position tomorrow.

Nico Hulkenberg pipped his Renault team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr by 0.102s for P8 in Q3.

Home hero Felipe Massa showed early promise of a top six position but his hopes quickly faded in Q3 and he was forced to settle for 10th. Esteban Ocon was an equally disappointing 11th despite strong practice pace.

The Haas duo were eliminated in Q2, with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen 12th and 14th fastest respectively. Stoffel Vandoorne split the pair in 13th.

Brendon Hartley made his second consecutive Q2 appearance but like in Mexico, he didn’t set a lap, this time due to the barrage of grid penalties coming his way.

Pascal Wehrlein outqualified Sauber team-mate Marcus Ericsson for the first time since Malaysia. The German missed out on a place in Q2 by half a tenth in 16th place.

Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly was 17th fastest ahead of Lance Stroll, who was enabled by the red flag to make it out on track following his failure in FP3. Ericsson was 19th with Hamilton rounding out the runners in 20th.
