  • Allgaier led a race-high 71 laps but lost the lead with four laps to go.
  • Hendrick Motorsports prospect Corey Day pounced on the traffic jam.
  • Despite being runner-up, Allgaier still extended his massive series lead.

It was vintage Justin Allgaier on Saturday at Dover Motor Speedway. Methodical, determined, and relentless. In complete control. The JR Motorsports veteran carved his way from 13th on the grid to the front, led a race-high 71 laps, and looked poised to add yet another trophy to what is quietly becoming one of the strongest NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series seasons of his career.

Then, with four laps remaining, everything changed in a matter of seconds.

As Allgaier approached lapped traffic entering Turn 1, rookie Blake Lothian hesitated between lanes just enough to disrupt the No. 7 Chevrolet’s momentum. That tiny pause opened the door Corey Day had been desperately searching for all afternoon. The Hendrick Motorsports prospect launched around the outside, cleared Allgaier off the corner, and never looked back, stealing away what seemed moments earlier like a certain Dover victory.

Justin Allgaier, Corey Day, and the split-second Dover moment that decided everything

The frustration was obvious the moment the checkered flag flew. Allgaier made his way down pit road and spoke with Lothian after the race, a conversation sparked by the lapped-car situation that ultimately decided the outcome.

While the veteran never exploded publicly or crossed the line into outright criticism against the 23-year-old, it was clear the late race sequence still bothered him.

“Blake and I have spoken, you know, a couple of times, and obviously, he’s super talented,” Allgaier explained afterward. “He just kind of made a move to go inside and then back outside, and then I didn’t know which lane he was going to go in.”

In hindsight, that brief hesitation was all Corey Day needed. “And unfortunately, you know, it let the No. 17 get to my outside,” the 2023 NOAPS champion said afterward, frustrated but measured in his assessment. “So hats off to Corey. I mean the whole No. 17 team. He was running me down there again.”

The key moment unfolded so quickly that Allgaier initially believed the traffic would actually help him. Instead, it trapped him in the least favorable lane possible at Dover, the middle groove, while Day carried momentum around the top, cruising to his second win of the season.

Allgaier explained that he initially expected Blake Lothian’s move to the upper groove to slow Day’s momentum, but the lapped car’s hesitation between lanes trapped him in the middle. It was the kind of split-second situation veterans remember long after the race ends. One indecisive move, a lane lost, and ultimately one win gone.

Still, even in disappointment, the 39-year-old made sure to acknowledge his 20-year-old rival’s looming threat – “Corey’s ultra talented,” he admitted. “He’s just trying to get his feet wet and figure out the stock car thing, and he’s doing a pretty darn good job of it.”

“I’m disappointed to lose to him, but at the same time, you watch what he was doing out there. I mean, obviously, he was running a heck of a race, and it’s going to be hard to hold him off even if the lap car wasn’t there.”

Corey Day’s breakthrough adds another twist to the NOAPS title fight

Simply put, the race itself was classic Dover chaos for much of Saturday. Track position became everything as drivers aggressively fought for clean air around the concrete one-mile oval. As the laps wound down, the restarts turned messy and several contenders found themselves caught in crashes.

“Chaos is probably an understatement,” Allgaier revealed post-race. “We saw some aggression just because of how hard it was to pass. I don’t feel like it’s ever been like that here.”

Ironically, that same difficulty passing made the late lapped-traffic sequence even more painful for the points leader. After spending nearly the entire afternoon controlling the race, one compromised corner was enough to hand the advantage away for good.

And yet, the bigger picture somehow became even stronger for Allgaier. Despite losing the race, the JRM veteran extended his championship lead to a staggering 175 points over Sheldon Creed, while Day’s breakthrough victory elevated him further into the conversation at P4 in the standings.

That combination perhaps explains why Allgaier’s post-race mood felt more disappointed than devastated. Allgaier admitted the racer in him would always leave Dover disappointed after coming so close to another victory, especially with his family at the track hoping to celebrate in Victory Lane.

Still, the JRM ace chose to focus on the bigger picture, believing his team executed nearly a flawless afternoon at one of NASCAR’s toughest venues. Unfortunately for him, at the “Monster Mile,” sometimes the missing 0.1% is all it takes to lose.
